Mary (Cook) Blume
Mary (Cook) Blume, 99, of La Grange, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016. Mary was born in Shiner on March 26, 1917, the daughter of Christian and Annie (Boehm) Cook. She married Leslie H. Blume on Feb. 7, 1935 in La Grange. During WWII, she obtained an Emergency Certificate to teach school at Mullins Prairie. She later waitressed at Weikel’s Lunch and Soda, was a bookkeeper, and an office nurse for several doctors in La Grange. Her major accomplishment was obtaining her Cosmetology license in 1958 and owning and operating her own shop for more than 25 years. She enjoyed playing softball as a girl with the La Grange Coca Cola team and bowling on a league later. Baseball and golf became passions shared with her sons and husband. Dancing to big band music was a love she had; especially to her favorite band, The Blumes Orchestra, because, it was thought, she had a crush on band leader Leslie Blume. She enjoyed a good game of Bridge and taught the next generation to love it as well. She also served in the Ladies Auxiliaries for the VFW and St. Paul Lutheran Church. She is survived by her two sons, Leslie “Butch” Blume, of La Grange, and Richard “Rick” Blume and wife, Jo Ann, of Lockhart; daughter, Theresa “Terry” Ingram of Bastrop; brother, Oscar “Cookie” Cook of La Grange; seven grandchildren: Matt Blume and wife, Claudia; Judd Blume and wife, Renae; Kelly Blume; Holly Gillar; Sam Ingram; Ben Ingram and wife, Jenna “Jen”; Jason Ingram and wife, Andi; thirteen great-grandchildren; dear family friend, Gilbert Eilers and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leslie H. Blume on Nov. 1, 1989; seven sisters; two brothers; daughter-in-law, Sherry (Spitzer) Blume. Visitation was held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Koenig and Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 427 S. Washington St. in La Grange, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016.
