Three Ways Leps Can Make Playoffs

La Grange can make the football playoffs in District 10-4A  in one of three ways Friday –

1. The Leps beat Caldwell,
2. Smithville beats Gonzales, or
3. Columbus beats Giddings

If at least one of those three scenarios happens Friday, La Grange is headed to the playoffs.

Let’s look at each scenario individually:

1. The Leps win at Caldwell – This is the easiest scenario to understand. If the Leps can beat the Hornets Friday, La Grange goes to the playoffs by virtue of their 3-2 district record. Not only that, La Grange would be the district runner-up with a win over Caldwell, as long as Columbus didn’t upset Giddings.

2. Smithville beats Gonzales – Even if La Grange doesn’t beat Caldwell Friday, the Leps still get in the postseason (as a fourth place finisher) if Smithville beats Gonzales because that would leave both Smithville and Gonzales with 1-4 district records and the Leps all alone in fourth. 

3. Columbus beats Giddings – Even if La Grange doesn’t beat Caldwell and Gonzales beats Smithville to pull into a tie with the Leps, La Grange could still sneak into the postseason if the Cardinals upset Giddings because that would vault Columbus into third place and leave the Leps and Gonzales tied for the final playoff spot. La Grange would win the head-to-head tiebreaker because the Leps beat Gonzales 14-6 back on Oct. 7.

* Also of note, in District 10-4A the tiebreaker for teams involved in a three-way tie in the standings after head-to-head consideration is margin of victory/defeat against the teams you’re tied with. Based on outcomes earlier in district, if La Grange, Columbus and Gonzales ended up in the three-way tie for third place (all with 2-3 records), Columbus and Gonzales would advance to the postseason while La Grange would stay home.
