Food Fight: Subway Gets Cease and Desist Letter After Turning On Sign

The City of La Grange delivered a cease and desist letter to La Grange Subway after the business turned on its LED sign last week, in violation of the City’s sign ordinance. Subway owner Tom Hudson said he turned on the sign on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

“I turned it on after going to the Council meeting on Monday (Nov. 14),” Hudson said in an interview on Tuesday, Nov. 22. “They had all their committee reports, but no one mentioned anything about the sign committee. I’ve been waiting since January for an answer on this, so I turned it on the next morning.”

The letter states that the business may face fines up to $500 per day if the sign does not come down before Dec. 2.

Hudson installed the LED sign at his business in January. Soon after erecting the sign, the City of La Grange informed him that the sign violated the city ordinance against changeable electronic signs. Since then, Hudson covered the electronic sign with a printed sign. The City appointed a committee to review the sign ordinance for possible updates. But the committee has yet to propose any ordinance changes to the Council.
