Female Overcrowding Problem at County Jail

When Fayette County built its current jail in 1985, county leaders probably did not envision a day when they would need more than four beds for female inmates. Today, the county often transfers female inmates to other facilities when those four beds fill up.

Fayette County already has agreements with Colorado and Bastrop counties to house inmates when the jail here is full. On Monday, Dec. 12, Fayette County Commissioners Court signed another agreement, this time with Lee County, to house inmates in Giddings.

“The main concern is with the females,” Noviskie said.

The 45 beds at the Fayette County Jail are typically adequate for all the male inmates. But when the female population rises above four, the county must send them elsewhere.
