Commissioners Disagree Over How to Split VFD Funding

County Commissioners voted unanimously back in September to give the 10 rural fire departments in Fayette County about $500,000 in extra funding next year paid for by a two cent property tax increase. But at a meeting this week the Commissioners disagreed over how to split that money between the departments.

The court ultimately voted 3-2 in favor of a plan that would split half the money equally between the 10 departments; the other half would be divided according to the population in each department’s service area and annual call volume. Pct. 3 Commissioner Harvey Berckenhoff, Pct. 4 Commissioner Tom Muras and County Judge Ed Janecka voted in favor of that plan.
