Schulenburg Adds MLK Day As City Holiday

Schulenburg City Council voted to add Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an official city holiday at a meeting on Monday, Feb. 6. 

MLK Jr. Day is an official holiday for Fayette County and all other municipalities in the county. It is also an official Federal and State holiday. The holiday is observed on the third Monday in January each year, which is close to King’s birthday of Jan. 15. Alderman Larry Veselka proposed adding the holiday at a meeting that was held last month on MLK Jr. Day, Jan. 16.

“I think it would be something to show respect to our African-American citizens in Schulenburg,” Veselka said.

“I completely and totally agree, we need to show respect and come on board with the rest of the communities in honoring that day,” said Mayor Roger Moellenberndt.
