Helen (Phillips) Cornes, 95, of Birmingham, Ala., formerly of La Grange, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017. Helen was born in Wichita, Kan. on June 27, 1921, the daughter of George Earl and Julia (Wuerich) Phillips. She married Raymond Cornes on May 17, 1943 in Merryville, La. Helen taught school for 24 years in Merryville, La.; Grand Saline, Texas; and La Grange. She enjoyed her civic activities as a volunteer for the Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives, Band Club and March of Dimes. Helen was a member of the V.F. W. Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma, Parent-Teacher Organization, Retired Teachers Association and several professional teacher’s organizations. She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Sechriest of Birmingham, Ala. and Julia McCollum and husband, Dave of Leander; one grandson, Michael Hinton of Leander, and one granddaughter, Debbie Hinton of Leander; nine great grandchildren and two great great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; grandson, Craig and son- in- law, Lauren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange. Funeral services will be held at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017. Burial will follow at La Grange City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 97, La Grange, Texas 78945.
