Tibor (Tibby) Walter Weston
Tibor (Tibby) Walter Weston, 97, died peacefully at home on his ranch near Fayetteville, on June 5, 2017. Born in Szombathely, Hungary, a town close to the Austrian border, Tibby survived World War II after serving in Hungarian forced labor battalions, fighting with the Resistance in the Siege of Budapest, and working with US Counter Intelligence Corps throughout Germany. He liberated Vera Edith (predeceased 1980) from Auschwitz concentration camp, married and immigrated to New York City in 1947. Settling in Houston, he founded the first large apartment management organization in Texas and went on to develop numerous Houston multi-family developments including Bayou Bend Towers in River Oaks. Founder and CEO of READY Association, an asset warehousing organization during the 1980s S&L crisis; as well as Founder and CEO of Advanced Rapid Transit Systems and owner of Skyway Monorail System. Tibby served as Chairman of the Harris County Grand Jury Association, as well as leadership positions in dozens of organizations including Houston Apartment Association, Board of Realtors, Boy Scouts of America, Occidental Millionaires Club, as well as his beloved Breakfast Club – the longest functioning real estate club in Houston - over 40 years. He was the first foreignborn recipient of the Americanism Medal awarded by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Tibby was deeply patriotic and worked with numerous conservative political organizations, and was featured in the 2010 movie, “We Still Hold These Truths,” produced by the Heritage Foundation. For more than 30 years, Tibby published the “On and Off the Record” newsletter, and was a prolific writer winning the Authorlink Literary Award for Biographies for “The Vision.” Author of several books of non-fiction, poetry, and humor, Tibby was also a musical composer and accomplished player of both violin and mandolin, and a former member of both symphony orchestras and ethnic bands. Tibby loved blackjack and was a top poker player, and loved quarter horseracing and his dogs. Tibby loved his wife Marcy West (predeceased 2016) with whom he traveled the world, and whose extended family enriched his life tremendously. His testimonial is recorded at the Holocaust Museum in Houston, his speeches have been heard by thousands, and yet he thrived most with his family gathered around him to hear tales of his remarkable life and loves. Tibby is survived by son, Peter W. Weston and wife, Kathy; son, Jim R. Weston and wife, Frances; son, Don M. Weston; grandchildren: Ryan W. Weston and wife, Eva; Michael W. Weston and wife, Jill; Max C. Weston; Samuel C. Weston. Great grandsons: Charles Weston, Jack Weston, Hunter Weston, Tyler Weston. Extended family: Ernest Weinberger, Frank Weinberger, Beth Kellermann, Beverly Brutzkus, Jonathan Zale. Extended family: Marcy Beard and husband, David; Scott West and wife Laurie; and grandchildren Kelley Reza and husband, Gabriel; Wesley Kurtz and wife, Andrea; Brenda Rincon; Zachary West and wife, Linda; Alexa West; great grandchildren Eli Reza and Francesca Reza and Segan Kurtz. A memorial service in Houston is scheduled for Tuesday, June 27 at 3 p.m. at The Jr. League of Houston, 1811 Briar Oaks Lane in Houston.
