Grumpy’s Shut Down in Flatonia Due to Safety Hazards Discovered During Storm

The City of Flatonia disconnected electrical service to Grumpy’s Motel during the storm on Saturday. Grumpy’s is located on Interstate 10 just west of FM 609.

Flatonia Police Chief Perry Kram said about six people were staying in the motel at the time. One of the lodgers called police because they wanted to leave due to water leaking in their room, but the motel management would not refund their money.

Kram said water was leaking badly from the roof and was collecting in rooms. Kram contacted the city utility crews, who determined that the leaking water constituted an electric hazard. Kram said the City disconnected the motel’s electrical service due to safety concerns.

“The rain and wind made it to where we didn’t have a choice,” Kram said. “It was a danger to the people staying there. They’re basically out of business until they get it fixed.”

Kram also convinced the motel management to offer refunds to the lodgers.

Elsewhere in Flatonia, police evacuated one resident from a home on 6th Street as floodwaters surrounded the house.

The power went out for an hour in Flatonia on Sunday night after a tree fell on a power line at Mill and 3rd streets. Interstate 10 and US 90 remained closed west of Flatonia Monday morning.
