Remember When?
Sept. 15-22, 1967
Hurricane Beulah, one of the mightiest storms in history, was slowly passing away in South Texas, leaving death and destruction in her long path. Between 275 and 300 hurricane refugees found haven in La Grange Wednesday and Thursday nights, thanks to the smooth operation of the Red Cross and Civil Defense disaster organization, as well as the goodness of various organizations and residents. Most of the refugees, who were from Texas coastal areas like Palacious, bedded down in the exhibition hall at the fairgrounds, the public school gymnasium, the VFW Hall and Roitsch’s Camp. County Judge Ike Petras, who served as overall chairman, worked with coordinator G. A. Koenig and deputy coordinators C.V. Creuzbaur, A. H. Spacek and Clarence Schwake. The sign-up center was located on the first floor of the courthouse and all refugees were asked to sign out at the courthouse before leaving La Grange to go home. A twister dipped down in the northern part of Schulenburg in the high school area, uprooting trees and scattering some stacked lumber.
