Another Rural Birthing Center Closes

Just days after the closure of the La Grange labor and delivery department, another area hospital managed by Community Hospital Corporation announced the upcoming closure of its birthing center.

CHC, the Plano-based company that manages St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange, also manages Yoakum Community Hospital.

Earlier this month, Yoakum Community Hospital announced the closure of obstetric services effective Jan. 2018.

 This comes on the heels of the closure of St. Mark’s birthing center Sept. 30.

A press release printed in the Yoakum Herald-Times newspaper about the closure included language similar to the press release issued in August about the upcoming closure of the St. Mark’s birthing center – with one notable exception.

There was no mention of the loss of Medicaid disproportionate share hospital payments as a reason for the closure of Yoakum’s birthing center.
