Three Weeks Until Filing Deadline, Local Political Races Taking Shape
The first day for candidates to file for a place on the ballot in the 2018 Primary election was Nov. 11. The filing period runs through Dec. 11 at 6 p.m.
Fayette County Republican Party Chairman David Stall reported 11 candidates had filed for a place on the Republican primary election ballot as of Friday, Nov. 17:
County Clerk - Brenda Kallus Fietsam;
County Judge - Sharon Muzny, Michael Smalley, James Rhodes and Joe Weber;
Commissioner, Pct. 2 - John Rubio and Luke Sternadel;
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 1 - Michael Peck and Kyle Hartmann;
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 - Sheila Coufal; and
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 3 - Charles Zapalac.
Stall said he expected additional Republican candidates to file before the Dec. 12 deadline.
Several candidates have publicly announced their intention to run for local office, although they have not yet filed official paperwork for a place on the primary ballot, including Bryan Corb for County Judge and Abe Pace for Pct. 2 Commissioner. In addition, County Clerk Julie Karstedt has announced her intention to run for re-election and Darla Blaha has announced a run for that county clerk spot.
Fayette County Democratic Party will hold an official filing party on Dec. 9. County Chairman David Deluca said the local party will announce the names of all the candidates at the event. Look for the event details in an upcoming issue of the Record.
