James V. Zimmerhanzel, 90, of La Grange, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018. James was born in Muldoon, TX on July 9, 1927, the son of Frank and Mary Ann (Kubicek) Zimmerhanzel. He married Gladys C. (Barina) Zimmerhanzel on Aug. 26, 1950 in Smithville. He served in the U.S. Army at the end of WW II in Okinawa, part of the Pacific Theater. He started his career working on the surveying crew for Continental Oil Company and eventually became a Certified Licensed Surveyor, worked alongside his wife, Gladys at Zimmerhanzel Grocery and worked as a postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office for 25 years. James served as a La Grange City Councilman for 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working cattle. James is survived by three sons, Wayne and wife Coleen Zimmerhanzel, of Columbus; Kenneth and wife Mindie Zimmerhanzel, of Lithia, Fla.; Rodney Zimmerhanzel and Lori Zimmerhanzel both of Houston; eight grandchildren: J D Zimmerhanzel and wife, Karen; Kasey Peikert and husband Corey; Cody Zimmerhanzel; Macie Bello and husband, Chris; Kay Leigh Rodriguez; Magan, Tanner and Tyler Zimmerhanzel; four great grandchildren: Cooper Zimmerhanzel; Lena Peikert, Natalie Yanez and Camden Zimmerhanzel. James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys Barina Zimmerhanzel; son, James Zimmerhanzel, Jr.; two brothers: Edward and Feliz Zimmerhanzel; three sisters Lena Peschel, Lexie Mares and Edna Flores. Visitation will be held Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 from 12 to 7 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home, 208 W. Pearl St. in La Grange. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 539 E. Pearl St. in La Grange, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018. Burial will follow in the La Grange City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the La Grange Volunteer Fire Department, 244 N.
