Hagens

George Paul Adolph Hagens, 91, of Schulenburg, passed away on Dec. 27, 2017, in La Grange. George was born Dec. 29, 1925, to Emil and Dora Hagens in the Swiss Alp Community of Schulenburg. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Dora Hagens, his first wife of 35 years, Dorothy Hagens, and his brothers, Nolan Hagens and Clarence Hagens. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Marguerite “Mickey” Bucek Hagens. George is also survived by his sister, Lillian Zimmermann and husband, Gilbert, and his sister-in-law, Oney Hagens. Other survivors include George’s daughter, Denise Beard and husband, Roy; his grandson, Rich Beard; his granddaughter Beth Quinn and husband David; two great grandsons, Mason Quinn and Riggs Quinn; and Roy’s sister Laura Jane Beard. Also, George is survived by his stepdaughters, Joan Dodson and husband Allen “Dit”, and Connie Ames and life partner, Woody Halpin. Other survivors include grandchildren Michael Dodson and wife Lisa Bartilotta, Kristen Dodson, and Cinnamon Olson and husband Brian. Great grandchildren include Sammy Dodson, Emily Dodson, Wren Gill, Elle Gill, Brendan Olson, and Taryn Olson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. George attended the Washington Country School in Swiss Alp as well as Blinn Jr. College. He served in the US Navy during WWII with Carrier Aircraft Service – Unit 32 on the Island of Maui. He received an honorable discharge with an Aviation Mechanic 3 Class Rating in 1946. George was the ultimate salesman. Throughout his career, he worked for Uncle Johnny Mills, Tideland Supply, Tools Inc., Conlee Seed Company, and Bonus Crop Fertilizer. He was a personable man with a great sense of humor who NEVER met a stranger. George retired in 1991. George married Mickey in 1993. They both enjoyed working in the yard and in the garden, dancing, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and hosting and attending dinner parties. George also loved to hunt and fish and had many special outings with his McMullen hunting group, his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. Also, he liked to barbecue and drink a cold beer or two. His barbecue chicken and ribs were his specialties, but his homemade ice cream was the best. George was active and volunteered in the Schulenburg and La Grange communities. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Lyons Lodge No. 195 in Schulenburg where he served as Chaplain. Also, he was a Shriner and member of the Scottish Rite. George was a member of the American Legion Post No. 143 and the VFW McBride Post No. 5623, both of Schulenburg. In addition, he was a member of the Czech Heritage in LaGrange. George was very strong in his faith. He was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Houston before moving back to the Schulenburg area. There, he was very active at his childhood church, The United Evangelical Lutheran Church at Swiss Alp, where he was a member and served in various positions on the Church Council including several terms as Church Council President and Congregational President. He also strongly supported the youth programs and especially encouraged those who felt a call to the ministry, like his brother, Clarence had. George felt proud of his role as a native son of this congregation. He was extremely generous in keeping God’s House beautiful and in helping with the refurbishing of the church steeple. The family would like to thank the entire staff at College Place Assisted Living and Schulenburg Regency Nursing Center. The endless amounts of kindness, care, and concern for George is greatly appreciated.
