Markwardt

Nettie Cordes Markwardt was born Aug. 4, 1920 to Rudolph and Alma Schmidt Cordes near Roznov. She was baptized Oct. 31, 1920 at St. John Lutheran Church in Haw Creek. She got her education at Haw Creek, Roznov and Shelby Schools. She acquired her GED in 1977 at the age of 57. Her first job was at Weikel’s in La Grange where she lived with relatives. She married Lee Roy Markwardt Jan. 1, 1946 at St. John Lutheran Church in Warrenton. They lived in New Braunfels (which she loved) until their move to La Grange. Later to Round Top where farming and gardening became their occupation along with taking care of Lee Roy’s parents, Herman and Hulda Seibert Markwardt. Nettie worked at various jobs outside of the home during her lifetime. Nettie is survived by two children, Stuart Lee Markwardt and wife, Susan, Barbara Smith and friend, Ed Vollmering, grandchildren: Brad Smith, Brent and Kristi Smith, Shelley and Brian Scheffer, Shayne and Bryan Kirts, Shelby and Robert Vaughn and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, in-laws, infant son, granddaughter and son- in- law along with brother, sisters and in-laws. Nettie was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shelby and Hermann Sons Life. Burial will be at Shelby Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brad Smith, Brent Smith, Brian Scheffer, Bryan Kirts, Robert Vaughn and Ed Vollmering. Honorary pallbearers are her great-grandsons, Hunter Smith, Brayden Scheffer and Kooper Kirts. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2018 in the Fayette Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shelby with interment to follow in the Shelby Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 1048 N. Jefferson, La Grange, Texas 78945, St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6814 Skull Creek Rd., Fayetteville, Texas 78540 or charity of choice. Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange is in charge of arrangements.
