Travelers Detained For Hours Over Stolen Vehicle Mix-Up
A traffic stop that lasted several hours left lots of Schulenburg folks wondering what all the fuss was about on Monday afternoon, Jan. 29.
The stop took place on US 77 at the north end of Schulenburg in the empty lot north of O’Reilly Auto Parts, where the recently-demolished Balzer Feed Mill once stood. The stop involved a Ford F-250 pickup hauling a Nissan Frontier pickup on a heavy duty lowboy trailer. The beds of both pickups were loaded with dozens of cardboard boxes. Both beds were covered with blue tarps.
According to Chief Deputy Randy Noviskie of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Ken Kretz initiated the stop after checking the license plate on the Nissan, which came back as reported stolen out of Galveston. The rig was heading east on Interstate 10 when Kretz made the stop.
The loaded trucks and trailer sat in the lot surrounded by law enforcement vehicles most of the afternoon while the Sheriff’s Office sorted through a complicated story.
