We Begin Again
The beginning of another school year is always exciting for me. As student, I was ready to see my friends again. There were new classrooms, new classmates and sometimes new schools. Along with that came new school supplies, new clothes and sometimes a new hairstyle. And always, there was the new teacher.
As a teacher, I was thrilled to get to know my new students. What would they think of my class? Would I do a good enough job? Having spent most of my summer preparing for the next group of students, I was so ready to begin. The overwhelming majority of my life has been in school, both as a teacher and as a student, so for me, the new year begins with the start of a new school year – not in January.
For most people, across the country, it is just another school year. For the kiddos in many parts of Texas, including La Grange, this new school year marks one year since the flooding from Hurricane Harvey devasted the area. One year since many of our local people found themselves homeless. Even sadder is the fact that many of those people are still homeless. Some are living in FEMA trailers, some are living in hotels and some are living with other families.
