Sister Alexia Vinklarek of the Congregation of Divine Providence, 93, of San Antonio, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018. Sr. Alexia Vinklarek was born in Cistern to Alex and Frances (Maresh) Vinklarek on Sept. 2, 1925, one of nine children. When Sr. Alexia was growing up in a close-knit Catholic family, her mother would ask which of the seven girls in the family would be the Sister, and which of the two boys would be the Father. Because of her interest in her church and spiritual matters, Veronica (her given name) had been encouraged to consider religious life. Her brother Emil, who did become the priest in the family, thought Veronica would be impressed with Our Lady of the Lake Convent in San Antonio. She was, and entered high school at the convent in 1940 when she was 15. So Veronica became Sister Alexia, a novice of the Sisters of Divine Providence on June 21, 1945, and made her first profession a year later on June 22, 1946. Sister Alexia was honored in 1996 for her 50 years of service as a member of the Sisters of Divine Providence. She is survived by sisters Edna Migl and Gladys Holub, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers Father Emil Vinklarek and Alex Vinklarek Jr., and sisters Emily Barta, Helen Kubacek, Margaret Ramsch and Carolyn Zurovec. All services for Sister Alexia took place in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent in San Antonio. Rosary was held on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection was held on Friday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Hall officiating. Internment followed at the Sisters of Divine Providence Cemetery in San Antonio.
