Fayette County Deputy Shot at the Carter Motel, Suspect in Custody

Update Nov. 2, 10 a.m.: The Fayette County Sheriff's Office identified the deputy shot in the incident last night, Nov. 1, at the Carter Motel in La Grange as Calvin "C.J." Lehmann. Lt. David Beyer of the Sheriff's Office said Lehmann was shot in the face and lost sight in one eye. Doctors are trying to save the other eye, he said. "Please keep him in your prayers," Beyer said.

Update Nov. 1, 9:13 p.m.: The suspect in the shooting this afternoon is in custody. The person shot was a Fayette County Sheriff’s deputy who was serving a felony warrant on the suspect. The deputy was transported by helicopter to Dell Seton Hospital in Austin and is in critical condition, according to La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath. The deputy has not been identified.

Update Nov. 1, 8:05 p.m.: Police are moving bystanders away from the area around the Carter Motel. Witnesses say the the incident began at the Dollar General Store about a block away when two officers tried arresting a man inside the stare. Witnesses say the officers used a taser on the suspect, but he was able to pull the probes off. The officers chased the suspect to the Carter Motel where the shooting took place a short time later. 

Update Nov. 1, 6:46 p.m.: A team of SWAT officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety just arrived. A police helicopter has been patrolling the area for the last 20 minutes. Fayette County EMS described the situation as an officer standoff on their Facebook page.

Earlier: There is a massive police presence at the Carter Motel in La Grange this afternoon, Thursday, Nov. 1.

Witnesses reported hearing dozens of gun shots around 5:45 p.m. Fayette County EMS took one patient to the helipad at St. Marks Hospital for helicopter transport. That patients injuries are unknown at this time.

Law enforcement personnel armed with long rifles and body armor appear to be searching the area.

Citizens should stay away from the area (FM 159 and Business 71).
