New County Judge Has Friends in High Places
Former Texas Governor and current U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry was in La Grange on Tuesday, New Year’s Day, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of County Judge Joe Weber.
Perry and Weber are old friends, having graduated together from Texas A&M University in 1972. After college, Weber rose through the ranks of the U.S. Marine Corps and retired as a three-star general, then served stints as Texas A&M vice president for student affairs and Texas Department of Transportation executive director before running for Fayette County Judge. At the same time, Perry rose through the ranks of Texas politics – first as a state house representative, then Agriculture Commissioner, Lt. Governor, Governor and now a cabinet member in President Donald Trump’s administration.
The two are also next-door neighbors in Round Top.
“You know how you seperate Aggies? You do it with a crowbar,” Weber said during speech Tuesday morning.
“He owes all of his success in life to us,” Perry joked while taking a picture with Weber and some other classmates from the Texas A&M Class of 1972, including Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp.
