Texas-Grown Rice A Thing of the Past?
“Ain’t no more cane on the Brazos,” the old blues holler lamented – and if the drought continues there may be no more
rice on the Colorado. In a closely split 8-7 vote at a special meeting last week, members of the Lower Colorado River
Authority board of directors asked the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to allow the water agency to cut off water to most south-central Texas rice farmers for the third consecutive year if the combined storage of water in the Highland Lake reservoirs is below 1.1 million acre-feet (55 percent of capacity) on March 1, 2014.
