Valentine’s Day 1970

I went back to my old diaries for this piece, trying to find a new Valentine story to tell you. I found this one that was both disappointing and funny at the time. The year was 1970 and we were living in Arkansas. That year Freemon had been out of town on business and he did not get back into town until late Saturday. Melissa and I had been lonely without him and looked forward to his arrival. Realizing it was Valentine’s Day, he stopped by the florist on his way home. It was late and they were ready to close. Much to his dismay, all roses were gone. In fact, the lady behind the desk told him,
