For the past six months I have worked most of each week trying to get all the legal work done that follows a death. As if the grief is not enough, there is all the gathering of information and the endless dealing with large entities whose associates do not always provide correct information in a timely manner.

During my growing up years, there were no Walmarts. No K- Marts, Gibson’s, Globe’s or any other big “box” stores either and Dollar Tree and Dollar General Stores were yet to sprout at every crossroads. But we did have popular “five and dime” stores where we bargain shopped— Woolworth’s, Kress, McLellan’s, Ben Franklin and my personal favorite … Sterling Department Store.

I’m facing a deadline to get some words to the editor and I have no interesting subject. So, I’ll just tell you about last Friday afternoon, which revolved around my trip to the store--a task we all--men and women alike— face with varying degrees of dread. From my personal perspective, I will go a step further---it’s akin to a fate worse than death. I hate to shop.

I had lived in La Grange for about two years when someone invited me to join the Senior Group for cards, dominoes and refreshments at the old Senior Center there.
