Sunset Carson, a star of 1940’s westerns, made one of his countless personal appearances on Mar. 29, 1976. But it is safe to say that none of the students and few of the faculty at Denton High School had any idea who he was.

AUSTIN — Texas is more invested every day in promoting increased and thorough hand washing, disinfecting surfaces and social distancing to reduce cases of the rapidly spreading novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

During my growing up years, there were no Walmarts. No K- Marts, Gibson’s, Globe’s or any other big “box” stores either and Dollar Tree and Dollar General Stores were yet to sprout at every crossroads. But we did have popular “five and dime” stores where we bargain shopped— Woolworth’s, Kress, McLellan’s, Ben Franklin and my personal favorite … Sterling Department Store.

In this time of universal social distancing many of us are facing anxiety, fear, trepidation. Forced to sit around the house and avoid face-to-face contact with others, some are also encountering extreme boredom. But not Kathi and me.

To the Editor: What are you going to do to make reliable free corona virus testing kits available to all Texans NOW? What are you going to do to make effective face masks available to all Texans NOW? What are you going to do to educate all Texans who are denying the lethal danger of this pandemic NOW? For example, when are you going to educate your constituents of the serious need to get tested if having diarrhea, fever, or dry cough and to do so by calling not visiting a hospital or doctor to avoid needlessly exposing those vitally needed health care workers?

AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott on March 13 declared a state of disaster in all Texas counties and listed actions agencies are taking to contain and minimize the spread of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus, a contagious flu-like respiratory disease.

The Carmine Volunteer Fire Department’s annual meeting will be held on March 26 at 7 p.m. and officers will be elected. Everyone is encouraged to attend. They are open to new ideas and suggestions.
