Combined Community Action and Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area are still continuing to make sure no seniors in our community go hungry, especially now. They are now serving approximately 140 seniors and have no plans to turn any away. “We have seen a definite increase for meal requests since the emergency began because many seniors are concerned they will not be able to get food,” said Combined Community Action Executive Director Kelly Franke.

With most in-person church services cancelled because of coronavirus precautions, the folks at the Remnant Church in La Grange organized a Resurrection Caravan to come together safely to celebrate Easter. Easter Worship Services, sponsored by the Tri-County Cooperative Ministries, ELCA will be held Saturday, April 11, at 5 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 640 Prairie Valley Road, West Point; and on Sunday, April 12, at 10 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 615 South Eagle, Weimar; and on Sunday, April 12, at 10:45 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 307 North Hackberry, Moulton.

As many are aware, President Donald Trump has asked people to stay in place until April 30 because of the continuing crisis with the coronavirus. The governor and local officials will provide specific guidelines for gatherings. Our pastors and church leaders seek to honor all public officials’ restrictions and prohibitions regarding gatherings until they are lifted. This is a gospel matter—we love our neighbors and won’t risk infecting them. It’s also a matter of law, theological and civil. We are using creative and responsible ways in which to provide inspiration to church members and people in the larger community through alternatives to in-person worship and compassionate care.

Even as the old AMEN food pantry facility is inundated by folks needs food assistance because of the coronavirus pandemic and its rippling effects, the new AMEN facility on Mode Lane continues to near the completion of its renovation (it was the temporary location of Second Chance Emporium after Hurricane Harvey). AMEN treasurer Garry Schellberg said the facility may be finished by late May.

Mrs. Annie Mae Janish from Fayetteville celebrated her birthday recently. She turned 102 years old. The event was celebrated where she resides at T.L.C. in Columbus.
