Above, parishioner Greg Northrup and Rector Eric Hungerford of St. James Episcopal Church provided drive-through ashes to go on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26. Hungerford said one of the church’s congregants came up with the drive-through idea last year. This year, about 27 motorists received ashes in the St. James drivethrough. “Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the 40 day journey in Lent,” Hungerford said. “It’s a time to reflect on our shortcomings and mortality, and a time to reflect on God’s love despite all those things. We apply the ashes to the forehead and say, ‘Remember that you are from dust and to dust you shall return.’ Its a reminder of life and our frailty. Although we are small, frail and mortal, but together we are much larger than ourselves.

The next phase of celebrating the new LGISD school bond improvements began Tuesday as students from pre-K through 6th grade got to use the new cafeteria for the first time. Going through the dual lunch lines first were pre-kindergarteners Carina Hernandez Osornio (above, right) and Benjamin Garlick (above, left). Middle, left, students begin to sit and eat in the seating area of the massive new cafeteria. Nancy Fritsch-Tielsch, director of the cafeteria said, “I can’t tell you how excited I am.” Fritsch-Tielsch cited both expanded room and new equipment as some of the best things about the new cafeteria.
