The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reported that a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a shootout with officers on FM 153 near Winchester Sunday afternoon, Oct. 21.
Authorities identified the man on Tuesday as 35-year-old Michael Watt of Freeport.

Ben Chovanec of Ellinger has always loved history, so in the early1950s on Sunday visits he willingly pulled up a chair at the bedside of his maternal grandfather, Ernest Coufal. The frail, bedridden old soldier recounted stories about his World War I service that Ben has never forgotten.

All that destructive floodwater that caused so much havoc in northern stretches of the Colorado River last week is flowing through Fayette County – but not at such dangerous levels. The Colorado River in La Grange rose from 12 feet last Tuesday to a height of 23 feet Saturday and Sunday.
